Let’s Talk About Us is a public art campaign and resource hub created by Asian Women's Shelter (AWS) and artist and activist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya. Every day at AWS we see how domestic violence devastates individuals and communities. As passionate advocates for community care, we are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate and encourage conversations and reflections on healthy relationships, families and communities.
We believe that preventing domestic violence is a difficult but not impossible task.
Conversations about violence in our communities are hard. They’re uncomfortable and often sad. And sometimes we don’t even know what to say or are unsure if we should say anything at all. It starts with creating respect and care across all kinds of relationships in our families and communities, talking about what healthy relationships look like, and learning how to give or get help if you’re concerned for a friend, loved one, or yourself.
We hope the guides, exercises and links on this resource site will help you feel more comfortable talking to friends and loved ones about your relationships in times that are easy and times that are hard. We hope that you’ll join us on this journey of care, compassion and awakening.
Through our partnership with BART, Let’s Talk About Us will reach thousands of passengers each day in more than one dozen stations systemwide, onboard trains serving each BART line, and on bus shelters and billboards in 5 neighborhoods including Chinatown, SoMa and the Mission. BART embraced the campaign and partnership in recognition that domestic violence happens in the BART system and as part of their commitment to enhance the safety of women and girls on BART and to disrupt the patterns of harm for all riders.
The campaign addresses a variety of themes and interventions related to domestic violence and shares resources to support healthier relationships across the Bay Area.
This work was made possible through a Creative Content partnership with AAPI Civic Engagement Fund and support from Asian Pacific Fund and private donors.
